Looking for a career change and thinking about moving into tech?
Even if you have no experience in the field, skills you already have are desirable and will transfer over well.
Combine these skills with your education and practical experience and you can be ready to hit the ground running.
Here are six transferable skills that will help you to hit the ground running.
A job in tech involves collecting, organising, and analysing large amounts of data.
You’ll often be faced with a problem and it’ll be down to you to figure out what’s wrong and offer innovative solutions.
Depending on your role you may be asked to look at why website visitors are not converting into customers. If you’re a developer, you might be asked to fix some broken code.
Being skilled in, and a love for, problem-solving will help you to progress in your tech career.
Identifying subtle differences in data and looking for patterns needs you to have a keen eye for detail.
In fact, many tech careers are heavily data-based and require good analytical skills.
If you love the idea of becoming a data analyst or working in cybersecurity, you’ll often be looking to find that coveted needle in a haystack.
Experience in looking for the needle will be well received in a job in tech!
Being a self-starter and proactively looking for ways to improve your skillset are traits that will help you in a tech career.
If you’re always looking for new courses you can take, or if you constantly find yourself trying a new hobby, your dedication to self-improvement will help you to succeed in your new career.
In any job, there will always be an element of trying to juggle multiple tasks at once.
Tech is no different.
If you have successfully managed to keep a number of projects all moving at one time then this a skill that will transfer over well into the field.
Do you have experience in planning, managing, and executing projects?
With a tech career as a web designer or graphic design, you may have multiple jobs for different clients that are ongoing at the same time.
Experience in project management will help you to make sure you keep each project moving and making sure you meet your deadlines.
Good communication skills will help you to work with both team members and customers.
Being able to confidently talk to other people is a skill that should not be underestimated.
Experience working in customer support, or even alongside colleagues, to solve problems will go a long way in a tech career.
If you’re considering making the change and moving over into a career in tech, you probably have more transferable skills than you realise you do.
