What is web development?

The internet is growing at an eye-watering rate, and none of it would exist without web developers. Web developers and front-end developers build the parts of websites and applications that users actually see and interact with (the “front-end”!)

Although they rarely design websites, it’s a very creative career and beginners are often surprised by how innovative and imaginative it can be. Front-end developers specifically write code in languages like HTML, CSS and JavaScript that defines the structure, style and functionality of things like websites and apps.

Is a career in web development right for me?

It’s important to know from the start that you do not need a technical background to become a web developer or a front-end developer (or a software developer in general!). So, if you dropped maths after your GCSEs or O-Levels, didn’t do a degree, did an arts or humanities degree, or have been working in a non-tech role – no problem. Another common misconception is that you have to be good at maths. This isn’t true either.

Being computer-literate and having an aptitude for problem-solving are both important for this career. If you’re not sure how you are with problem-solving, that’s okay. We recommend trying a free online coding course to get a feel for it.

How do I become a web developer?

More career changers than ever are training from absolute beginner to professional developer by going to a coding bootcamp. Strong career support and industry connections sets the best bootcamps apart. You could also complete an introductory course to help you decide whether coding is for you.
